Ruger's AR-556 semi-automatic rifle is made from froged aerospace-grade 7075-T6 aluminum. The hard coat anodized, flattop upper receiver includes a forward assist, dust cover and brass deflector, while the handguards are made from heat-resistant glass-filled nylon. It has a carbine-length, milled gas block with multiple attachment points for a QD socket, bayonet lug, and sling. Serrations on the angled face of the gas block provides a low-glare surface. The Rapid Deploy folding rear sight provides windage adjustability and the front sight post is elevation adjustable, and includes a front sight tool. The A2-style F-height allows co-witness with many optics. It also has a bolt machined from 9310 alloy steel, single-stage trigger, chrome-plated bolt carrier with a matte black oxide finish on the exterior, and patent pending barrel nut and Delta ring for one person handguard removal and installation. This model has a black six-position buttstock and handguard, and a Magpul PMAG.

With so many competing rifles available, it can be challenging to decide which one is the best bang for the buck. This is especially true for first time buyers and/or those without an unlimited budget like I was. The Ruger 8500 AR-556 is a great value when all its features are considered. Many guns in this price range lack a dust shield, forward assist, and back up sights as standard equipment. The Ruger has them all, plus a unique delta ring that takes the fight out of removing handguards, a T-7075 aluminum lower (not a plastic fantastic), and an overall quality that can be seen and felt.
There have been zero malfunctions, regardless of brand, shooting mainly 55 and 62 grain in either .223 or .556.
The only change I've made is adding a Vortex Strike Eagle II scope to compensate for my older eyes and to have a mix of red dot-like close range and magnification for longer shots in the same optic.
I am very pleased with this rifle and readily recommend it.
My first AR and love the way it feels and looks. The only reason for only 4 star’s is it’s -28 here so haven’t been able to shoot it yet but hopefully soon.
