First off, my experience with an O/U is none. Honestly, I have very little experience with shotguns. Long story short, I shoot at a family friend's house almost weekly(rifles/pistols). He had a buddy over and they were shooting clays one weekend and I tried it out with his 1100. I loved it. So, that is why I am here.
My goal was not to spend a ton of money on something I may only use a couple of times a year. We are mostly precision/bench rest shooters. So, I started looking at options and I felt like I would prefer an O/U opposed to a S/A. Problem is, most forums insist you need a $1200 gun, even to just be starting out with clays. After researching it, I decided to gamble on this ATI. I mean, it was <$400. Not much of a loss if it didn't pan out.
Once purchased, Gun Pro Deals shipped it to my local FFL quickly. I was down with the flu, so I didn't go pick it up the day it came in, but once I felt better, I went and picked it up. Took it home. Cleaned the packing grease out of it. Put it together and started blasting clays. Remember, I had just shot at 5 clays before. This bad boy shoots straight. I ran 15 shells through it and hit all 15 clays. And I am as novice as it gets. I was impressed with this gun, to say the least.
Fit and finish is solid! No wiggle or play, anywhere.
Breaking it open is stiff, but it is getting better each time I use it or oil it. The wood is very nice. Not overly polished and take looking. The checkering in the grip areas is perfect. The engraving is subtle and not overdone.
Shooting it is a breeze. It is light as a feather. Site says 6 pounds. I have not weighed it, but I bet it is close if not spot on. Some people said the light weight makes for a rough recoil, but I don't agree with that, at all. I am a big dude. 6'4" 270. Maybe that is why. I shoot big caliber rifles a lot and am used to recoil. Maybe that is why. But it just doesn't seem bad, to me, at all. My chassis .308 kicks more without the suppressor on it. I am shooting 2.75 7.5 shot shells in it, for reference. I am sure a 3" would add recoil.
Verdict: Buy it. You won't regret it. It is a pretty piece. It shoots straight. Comes up quick and true. Very solid gun.
Note: I did add a magnetic high viz. sight on the front end. The 1100 I shot had one and I loved the visibility, so I ordered one for this gun. All in all, gun/FFL/sights, I have less than $440 in it.
